The Boy Who Destroyed His Stepmother's Restaurant — Part 5: Friday at Six

Ten months after Jack opened the freezer, he sat on the front steps of Mark's apartment with his overnight bag between his shoes.

Lucy was scheduled to arrive at six for their first full weekend without a counselor, advocate, or supervised exchange.

The visits had begun with forty-five minutes in a family-services office.

They expanded to walks in a public park, then dinners, Saturday afternoons, and full days that ended before dark.

Lucy had arrived early for every visit.

When traffic delayed her once, she called Mark before Jack had time to wonder.

Consistency had not erased the seven silent months, but it had given Jack new memories that did not require him to pretend the old ones were gone.

The adults' cases had moved more slowly than the stories people told about them.

Diane eventually entered a negotiated plea to unlawful restraint and a related coercion charge after evidence exchanges, motions, and several court dates.

After accepting the plea, the court imposed a sentence, supervision, and continuing orders preventing contact with Lucy and Jack.

The state labor agency separately found that Hearth & Vine owed back wages and diverted tips to multiple employees.

A court-approved sale of restaurant equipment funded the first payments, while a binding installment plan covered the remaining amounts and penalties.

The lease ended, the sign came down, and the restaurant never reopened.

No one offered Mark or Lucy ownership of what remained.

Lucy's name was formally cleared in the payroll investigation because the disputed edits required Diane's owner credentials and continued long after Lucy had left.

Clearing her name did not clear her absence.

Lucy said that herself whenever another adult tried to turn her into a blameless victim for Jack's benefit.
