The Pendant Victor Thought Was Worthless — Part 4: Behind the Blue Door

The Riverside Motor Court had been closed for renovation since winter.

Its roadside sign was dark, several windows were covered with plywood and blue painter's tape marked the doors contractors still used.

Detective Ortiz contacted the owner before midnight and learned that Victor once maintained the laundry equipment and had access to utility spaces.

The tagged key should have been returned when his employment ended.

The owner believed the laundry office was empty, but he could not remember checking it during the previous week.

Ortiz submitted those facts in a warrant application, and the judge issued the warrant before officers entered the property.

She did not call Richard or raise Noah's hopes before officers reached the door.

Hope was not evidence, and promises made too early could become another kind of harm.

Two patrol officers met Ortiz and the property owner beneath the broken exterior light.

They crossed an empty parking lot toward a service corridor behind the guest rooms.

After identifying the correct building, the owner remained at the edge of the service corridor.

The corridor smelled of damp concrete and old detergent.

At its end stood a blue metal door with LAUNDRY OFFICE printed across a scratched white plate.

The property owner's current master key unlocked the handle lock but not a newer deadbolt beneath it.

Property records did not list the deadbolt or any authorized key for it.

Ortiz tried the key recovered from Victor in the second lock.
